Completion of this one-day firearms safety course satisfies or exceeds the training requirements mandated by the State of Connecticut for pistol permit applicants.
This program is designed to teach safe, responsible handgun handling and includes live-fire instruction with both semi-automatic pistols and revolvers. Instruction is delivered by certified firearms instructors, including NRA-certified professionals with extensive field and training experience.
Basic pistol operation (semi-automatic pistols and revolvers)
Firearm nomenclature, safety, and handling procedures
Ammunition types, safety, and proper handling
Safe storage of firearms and ammunition
Fundamentals of pistol shooting and shooting positions
Standard range safety rules and commands
Identification and resolution of common firearm malfunctions
Cleaning, care, and maintenance of handguns
Additional foundational firearms safety concepts
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive a certificate or letter of completion. This documentation may be used when applying for a pistol permit in the State of Connecticut, Florida, and other jurisdictions where applicable.
Under Connecticut law, applicants must complete several required steps to obtain a state pistol permit:
1. Complete an approved firearms safety course
Also referred to as a pistol permit training class.
2. Obtain an application packet
Available through the applicant’s local issuing authority (typically the local police department).
3. Complete the application and gather documentation
This generally includes identification, birth certificate, letters of reference, fingerprints, and proof of training completion.
4. Submit application to local issuing authority
All required materials must be submitted for review and processing.
5. Background investigation
A thorough background check will be conducted. Under current guidelines, the issuing authority has up to 8 weeks to approve or deny the application. Applicants may follow up if no response is received after this period.
6. Temporary State Pistol Permit (if approved)
If approved, applicants will receive a Temporary State Pistol Permit. This permit does not authorize firearm purchase and is valid for 60 days. During this period, applicants must apply to the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection in Middletown, Connecticut, to obtain their full State Pistol Permit. Failure to do so may require restarting the process.
7. Appeal process (if denied)
If an application is denied, the applicant may appeal to the Connecticut Board of Firearm Permit Examiners. Appeals must typically be filed within 90 days of denial.
